Product launches are so often slimy in their approach to WOW or be cool, especially when they are looking to out hype their rival.  Sports drinks and video games are unabashedly manipulative, but when talking about tech products, it gets even hairier.  Which is why I was so impressed today when I followed a simple click through for the Kin.  Now, I am an iPhone user and probably won't be switching anytime soon (especially not with the new 4G double camera model coming out sometime before 2020), but I am interested in all the devices that I acknowledge as better than the iPhone in many ways.  The Kin campaign, known from here on out as "the journey," got my interest immediately.

First noticed on the iLike site (after uninstalling the iLike sidebar for reasons that I told the website redirect were related to it slowing down my system) which redirected me to MySpace, a little website that used to, I guess, service the social networking crowd, I clicked play and watched the first trailer.  I must admit, the tag on the whole campaign really caught my interest.  It speaks to a philosophical question that is both timely and wise to explore: Who are our online friends and are they really friends?  You then look down and see Rosa looking up at you and she is your daughter or girlfriend or neighbor or what have you.  Identifiable, archetypal.

The journey examines many of the faces that are our social network.  The ex, the flirt (the word "stalker" is currently unacceptable after Kelly Oxford rocked the tweet and got lashed from some concerned folks with dried up humor reserves), the mom or quirky adult figure, and, well, that's it for now.  I believe they are releasing 2 episodes a week for 8 weeks until the official product launch. I have a read several ad blogs and branding blogs and they all seem to be just as impressed as I am with the campaign.  The gist being that "the journey" doesn't hit you over the head with either branding or product placement.  It is coming at you with a strictly webisode style promotion, like: "here's Rosa, she's sweet, she's real, she's got a KIN and we're taking her around to answer some questions about where we are at with social networking."  It's perhaps not a new approach, but it worked for me.  Just watching some of the very well placed shots of the KIN doing things and running applications made me want one.  It actually did its job without having to try to suck my soul through a straw.

Apparently, agency two fifteen (formerly T.A.G) has signed on with Microsoft to really push in a new direction.  If they do end up sucking my soul through a straw, then, well played, agency two fifteen.  Your oddly all-numeric new name is creepy enough to bring back some X-Files imagery, but you are doing the job that needs to be done without making me feel owned.  In the meantime, I'll be waiting for the next installment of Rosa's Big Adventure.

The buzz word is, what, if anything, could ever compete with Apple or produce the sought after "iPhone Killer"? The answer is: no one. But, will apple crumble under the weight of its own empire?

History and Nature run rampant with examples cultures and creatures who, as the undisputed top of the food chain, become their own worst enemies. The biggest threat to the Roman Empire was its own corruption. A human being's natural predator is other people. The Church during the middle ages found that one of its own priests, Martin Luther, was the one to tear it apart, and when new adult lions take over a pride, they often kill the young and thus eliminate the chance of any rivalry against offspring he later fathers.


The catch-word in the world of smart-phones is who or what could stand up to the marvels of the iPhone and shine brighter than it. Who or what could stand against its resplendent coolness and utility and garner the favor of the public. What, if anything, will be the "iPhone Killer." The answer is nothing will, I think.

After all, it is undeniably sleek, inexpensive (not counting service fees) and easy to use. Most Web ware is disigned specifically for its screen. It is the bench mark. It has no other natural predators - not even the Blackberry - or at least not in the same way.

But an ill wind is blowing through the social sphere for Apple. It would seem that the Mac world without any natural predators, and perhaps without the demanding vision of an ailing Steve Jobs, they've seemed to start showing little cracks and chicks in their armor, especially in their hallmark of out-thinking or defining design and ultra-no-brainer-usability.

When my wife had to call upon Apple Care to replace her 15" Mac Book Pro, her model had been discontinued and was sent the latest "upgrade." A stickler for form, she opted to haggle her way to whatever the warehouses still had in stock that resembled her older model. In the end, she fell in-line with the clamor and debate that said, "Why didn't Apple offer a matte screen when releasing the next version of their line of laptops?"

While we’ve come to accept that today’s LCD displays, particularly on notebooks, are mostly of the glossy variety, Apple took it a step further with a glass sheet on top of what already appears to be a glossy LCD screen. The affect is an unsettling double-reflection from a display that’s mirror-like.

"We’ve spent a considerable amount of time with the full range of Apple notebook displays, from the matte and glossy from the previous generation MacBook Pro to the “glassy” unibody MacBook. And we’ll be the first say that the aesthetic designs of the new unibody MacBooks are worthy of a museum, but in terms of usability, the glass-covered screen is a pain to work with even when indoors". - "MacBook Pro Glossy vs. Matte FIGHT!," February 26, 2009 by Marcus Yam http://www.tomshardware.com/

 At the end of the day, she "settled" on a 17" version that was selling in 2006, despite what she could have had with up-to-date hardware and processing power. She, the epitome of Apple's target audience that is characterized by an overarching attention to form over function, was happier with an older machine.

A month ago this popped up in my Facebook feed:

"I want to punch the dumbass at Apple who designed the latest shuffle. New shuffle is about as useful 40 lb sack of deflated footballs. Not only do I want a refund, but I now officially want Apple to get swallowed by an 8-track and Etch-a-sketch revival." - September 4, 2009 (Name withheld out of courtesy).

Presumably, the issue here was that the new shuffle has no buttons. Controlling its playback happens through controls on the headphones.

A few days later of Facebook:

"Adam P. officially hates his iphone." -September 16, 2009

A followup comment to someone considering buying an iPhone vs. continuing with a Blackberry, the same user said this:

"I'd stay stick with it. The iPhone offers the best user interface of any smartphone on the market. It's a joy to use, when it works. Unfortunately, it's tied to AT&T's decrepit network. 3G is frequently unusable, voice quality is poor, and I can seldom get through a call of more than ten minutes without having it drop. A fast car on poor roads makes little headway, while continuing to cost a lot."

This user makes a living as a computer professional, and granted he's quoting issues with his cellular carrier, but when there's only one option Apple has given for using its "fast car" then the utility of its gadget is united with the mobile carrier that supplies its pipeline. In short, it's no use pardoning the shortcomings of the iPhone because the affairs of AT&T is out of its hands. Presumably the folks who designed it dreamed, hoped and prayed that the success it has garnered is what we see today. They want to have everyone want one and own one without thinking that their options for service aught to be sufficient to accommodate infinite demand for their product.

Furthermore, it's a really swell idea and truly characteristic of Apple to have the iPhone's synchronize with iTunes. It's a really swell idea, in theory. But, anyone who has had to take their computer in for a service repair and had it returned empty and at factory condition knows that it's nearly impossible to restore iTunes back to the state you had it.

iTunes is a poor excuse for a synchronization software. Data is gold these days, and though Apple is known for removing as many buttons and extra screens as possible, having access to how and when and in which direction your data is being moved or stored is critical. It's not something to keep behind the closed doors of buttons, and certainly a task that should have more real estate than to mingle on the same patio as a juke box or a media shopping mall.

Ask anyone who has lost all their contacts when a reloaded iTunes automatically syncs and overwrites its empty library to your iPhone and you're looking at one miserable socialite.

Furthermore, if you, say, want to synchronize your contacts and calendar items with anything but iCal or MobileMe, you're in for quite a hacking adventure. Apple has yet to recognize (and it never did since that is its underlying ethos, and perhaps its beauty) that nowadays people are forming gadget ecologies. That is, when every gadget you own, touch and double click is made by Apple, there is harmony, style and perfection, but throw in a free radical like Microsoft Entourage and your whole Device's OS collapses.

Finally there are some strange hardware omissions to Apple's next generation of mainstay products. The new iPod Touch doesn't have a camera, while the iPod Nano does - but only for video. There's been a lot of speculation on why Apple, who has done the miraculous over the years with making the mouse a mainstay, creating (or at least making it commonplace) the Web app industry, for taking our mobile devices to the next level in the form of the first release of the iPhone, and in short, always being the pioneer, but now it would seem that they are becoming insincere with their fans.

Gizmodo.com has a full treatment on why their next generation of products has, not just fallen short of what we have all come to expect from Apple - miracles, but also some of their peculiar decisions on both form, their strongest suit, and function. Here's the concluding thoughts from Gizmodo's article, "Why There Is No Camera In the iPod Touch and Why That Sucks" by Jesus Diaz:

"• Feature Evolution: This, to me, is the most reasonable explanation. Apple is getting oh-so-lazy. Or, better said, greedy. They are the number one player in every single category. They own the market. And they know the competition is just catching on. So instead of releasing an iPhone that is way better than the previous model, they release the modest upgrade of the iPhone 3GS. And instead of releasing an iPod touch with a nice camera, they just slap some new software, slightly updated guts and more memory.

That's what you get when a company owns an empire, and the other tiny people are trying to catch up with an already phenomenal device. The company gets slow and complacent, and does the minimum to keep its products ahead."

 And so, it would seem that Apple has a finally found its match: iTself. It's hard to imagine those years when Apple was a lame and crippled company; when there was no hope that it would ever survive, much like the word around town is shouting the end of Palm. It's hard to remember that Microsoft was hot and not an "Evil Empire," but behold! They passed the baton back over to Apple.

It may very well be that Apple continues to hold its dominance for many years to come, but, it's hard to conceive of that happening. See, Apple, at its core, loathes diversity. It thrives when all of the apples in the barrel are freshly provided by their orchard. Stick anything not grown by them and their bushels rot with from that one bad apple.

It's competition - particularly next generations of Android and WebOS - will have on its side, not only a coalition of mobile providers and Goolge's army of free products to draw from in the case of Android, but also an army of pasty faced youths who have a small learning curve ahead of them in designing for WebOS. In short Apple has fallen, already, way behind in what is the zeitgeist of Web 2.0: namely, open sourcing and open platforms.

They're miserly with their products and shun any incursion into their territory.

Frankly, that will be their undoing, and their time in the sun as the undisputed top of the food chain will fade.

Today, I opened a free application that I've used to follow both my friend's and stranger's Twitter feeds: TweetDeck. For the life of me I can't find the catch.

I only have to open the program once or twice a week to feel like I'm up to date with the village gossip. Elegantly, it aggregates all the chatter into streamlined columns that a flick of the index finger scrolls effortlessly. It also automates archaic Twitter lexicon like "hash tags," the "re-tweet," and shortened URL's. You don't have to know what it means. It does it for you. It does it by default and the buttons are friendly saying "reply " and "Direct Message " versus "coding" the symbols '@' and 'D.'

If you weren't sold on the app already, get this: it aggregates Facebook statuses as well, so if you're content to just see the latest chatter on your circle of friends, and don't want to dote over their promotions in "YoVille" or "What Kind of Fuzzy Dice Are You?" then it's a great app for just getting to the meat of socializing, interacting and responding to an electronic, ongoing party. B.Y.O.B.

For the life of me, I can't find an ad on this app or anything but good clean feed without nagging on and on on what I should buy. At worst TweetDeck installs by default in the furthest-most column a section titled "TweetDeck Recommends," as if this is, presumably, where the software publisher injects its stream of advertisements and forward thinking marketing campaigns to make its buck.

No problem. Quite a bang I get for their buck. Even trade, I say, and, really, I think I'm getting the lion's share of the bargin in utility and average disdain for e-advertising to begin with.

Kudos to you TweetDeck for preserving and protecting the FreeWorld Wide Web.


Hulu.com, like in probably many other homes, has become a mainstay for viewing the latest titles and shows these days. It has not been clear to me from probing comments whether or not other folks in my domain are doing what I've been doing in my home: discarding the T.V. set altogether and using a relic, out-of-date PC with a live internet connection to have what seems to be like unlimited access to mainstream media and movies. We've hooked up an off-the-shelf consumer grade set of surround-sound speakers up to it, and blammo! A Full stereo entertainment system. At best we could upgrade to the largest flat-pannel monitor, but for now a 15-inch hand-me-down Viewsonic from early Y2K has done just fine. No T.V. No Receiver, nor tuner, nor DVD or Blue Ray player. Just a old tower and some speakers, and the only thing we miss is a remote controll vs. the mouse and keyboard input.

Now, between Hulu and Netflix.com's "Watch Now" feature (a paid subscription that comes with, in my case, three DVDs at a time), there is no lack for things to zone out or eat dinner to. To boot, at least with Hulu's case, I get an e-mail reminder when one of the shows I follow like Kings or Eureka or Warehouse 13 has a new episode up to watch. Netflix has a less-than-up-to-date selection, but my hubby finds the ready supply of 12 full seasons of on-demand Murder, She Wrote a nice, decompressing addition to her stress-filled life.

In short, the digital age ripe with media and hours of numbing entertainment has been good to us. It has filled our lives with the loving work of actors and producers, and it has not been a challenge to have our home at state-of-the-art levels at a working class lifestyle.

At worst, like with TweetDeck, Hulu's fee for its outstanding service is the perfunctory ads throughout each show. No blame, it's just like watching your T.V. ... except! There's only one ad per break. That is, for now, there's never back to back ads, and after thirty seconds your browser goes back to the show. Also, for the extra nit-picky, the show displays a progress bar with dots indicating when the ad will interrupt. If you're into efficiency in these time-poor days, Hulu makes it easy to maximize efficiency for knowing exactly when to get the popcorn out of the microwave or for discussing critical parts of the story with loved ones.

At any rate, all anal affects aside, it's rather easy to sit through the commercials there. It's short, and at the end of the day, the ratio is welcome for breaking up and indicating a meter to the shows. 30 seconds here and there for such killer entertainment ... I think I'm getting the lion's share of the bargain in utility and average disdain for e-advertising to begin with

Facebook has become a family mainstay on this end of the computer screen, not just for me, but for my lady. To that end, the rapport and discourse surrounding the curious habbits of our Facebook friends has become a regular topic over dinner.

Today, my lady forwarded me a wry CNN article "The 12 most annoying types of Facebookers." A terrific piece of florid and biting in its categorizations of Facebook archetypes, it, in short, described what we should all be considering: what's appropriate to add to our Web lives vs. what should remain on the LAN lines of communication. E-etiquette.

What was surprising in this was that what we have come to know as a simple act - to share what we know - by way of e-mailing me a link has brought up a rather by-the-way kind of recognition.

It so happened that I managed to squeeze the time in to check out what my lady was so excited about while on a public bus cruising through Brooklyn. At the moment, the only access to the Web was through my cell phone and an out-of-date one to boot.

Regardless, even while I was able to access the information and would later discuss intelligently with my hubby about the article, one thing stuck out in my mind over the experience of reading it on my mobile device. Namely, as the Web page loaded in a version of Blazer, I noticed that the top of the screen had as-if-it-couldn't-load that hallmark of clickables that now litters any surfing experience through reputable newspapers and periodicals: "skip to main content."

Anyone who's out to read the morning news on a laptop or desktop knows that oftentimes, their news will require a few extra "smart" clicks to get away from the nag screens or ads. For what it's worth, embeded in the Facebook article, one could click the video supplement "Watch as Facebookers reveal bugbears," and it leads directly to a 10-second video ad before a "Blogger Bunch" clip. Nag screens.

I was somewhat grateful that a "nag screen" wouldn't and couldn't pop up in my cheesy smartphone browser. Instead, there were no ads to navigate through, and on a certain level, I thought, "It's a holy thing, this cell-phone. Neither telemarketers, nor spammers, nor pop-up ads ever penetrate into it."

I don't suspect that this is a function of my out-of-date model (by the way, it's not so old. It's still being sold on the shelves if that says anything for vintage gadgets). I suspect that either there's rules and laws regarding targeting cell phone users, or there's the impedance of companies who provide cell phone coverage - their safeguarded antennas and bandwidth, or just maybe cell phone browser technology has not yet caught up to the avenues that marketers and advertisers have been able to capitalize on.

At any rate, in a time when we're all becoming familiar to computing via our mobile phones, kudos to cell phones preserving and protecting the FreeWorld Wide Web.


The unfortunate summary of all these kudos for those supporting what I think is, in Neil Armstrong's words a "giant leap for mankind," is that, not to point a bony finger but merely to describe, is the endemic problem of our times. All of these great leaps straddle the schitzophrenic mash of unlimited resources of knowledge with the age-old problem of making a living - or a profit.

From its inception, the computer networks such as the World Wide Web, at its very core, are about copying and duplicating information and data. That's its purpose. Type into Wikipedia "World Wide Web History" and here's an excerpt of what comes up:

On August 6, 1991, Berners-Lee posted a short summary of the World Wide Web project on the alt.hypertext newsgroup. This date also marked the debut of the Web as a publicly available service on the Internet.

The WorldWideWeb (WWW) project aims to allow all links to be made to any information anywhere. [...] The WWW project was started to allow high energy physicists to share data, news, and documentation. We are very interested in spreading the web to other areas, and having gateway servers for other data. Collaborators welcome!" —from Tim Berners-Lee's first message

Granted, there was a lot of preamble to Berners-Lee ranging back into the the 50's, but what followed from his hyper-text language was, at its inception, a way to share accross computing platforms, and what followed after that was the evolution of what we have come to know and love as the Web.

It's a Web that needs to make money - like we all do. It's a bonanza of information sharing, but at the end of the day we all gotta pay the bills. It's the fact that this "great leap in humankind" straddles a world that was defined by territory - even in the sense of information as territory.

Now it's an overwhelming signal-to-noise ratio as everyone not only gets to share data, but also the minutia of their day. All this noise, especially in cases such as this:

• Login to today's TweetDeck, and you're gonna find a novel idea: a marketer that has flagged certain key words and is scouring tweets for a match to their product. Tweet about it, and you're going to get in pre-loaded column titled "Mention" that someone out there has "replied" to it with a helpful comment such as, "Did you know that you can buy plantain chips at $1.99 at http://bit.ly ..." ---->I had the words "plantain chips" in a tweet this afternoon.
• Only time will tell if Hulu will keep up the good work and limit a commercial break to only ONE 30-second commercial per break. T.V. and even local radio has gone chronic to making it an atmosphere where the ads get center stage.
• If anyone can crawl out of that deep, dark, disinterested cave in their brain when it comes to clicking a Web ad on a screen, then perhaps they would become less in-your-face while you're doing your usual Web surf-through-the-news. (For the record, a Dominos Pizza flyer on our household doorstep prompted us to order it last week. Ads work, just how much of it to how much you get in content is a delicate balance before the scales topple).
  

At the end of the day, we are all straddled with the responsibly of taking this established environment of an information super-highway, and incorporating it into the human discourse effectively and with prudence towards what has been.

From its inception, the World Wide Web has asked to be free - or at least a free exchange of ideas It still is within its domain to remain free. Yet, it is part of all of our lives at a time when taxes are being hiked, inflation is immanent; in short, it has become a mainstay precisely when our attention towards what the ideas we cling to as prosperity are at their peek.

There is no blame. This is the discourse that shapes the vision tomorrow -one that absorbs what was important today and casts it in the needs of what's to come.

At worst, what's to fear in all of this is a dystopian vision from Ray Bradbury's novel, Fahrenheit 451. That is, Bradbury's book, published in the 50's describe a future - our future - where his existential protagonist, Clarisse McClellan, says:

“ ... I’ve lots of time for crazy thoughts, I guess. Have you seen the two hundred-foot-long billboards in the country beyond town? Did you know that once billboard were only twenty feet long? But cars started rushing by so quickly they had to stretch the advertising out so it would last.” (click here for full excerpt)

I am not a comic book geek, but suffice it to say that I was beset by great pangs to buy all the stuff I saw around there. I wanted the Battlestar Galactica Viper CAG badge. I wanted the meaty Star Trek communicator pins or insignias for my winter coat- the ones that have the heft that says, "beam me up" or whose gold plate would demand a salute on New York's busy streets.

The energy is electric in the convention all, saturating the air from the pages and toys and booths and the girl shuffling by head-to-toe in a beat up, cardboard rendition of Aqua Teen Hunger Force's Ignignokt.

I wish I had the cash to start reading X-men from when it costs a quarter so I could catch up to all them; so that, I, too, could be walking around, proudly, with a cape and tights today. I wanted ... I really wanted to be saying "I'm not worthy" to some of the artists sketching in the far back corner.

A long line of folks winds out of one row and into another - perhaps an hour wait; the eagerness on each of their faces to just stand before the presence of Jim Lee. I wish I knew why I should have done the same.

Why are there too many booths dedicated to corsets and swords?

Why do all the DVD and CD-selling booths - though erudite in their selection of titles such as the booth of Out-Of-Print movie soundtracks look like they're purveying bootleg editions. My companion swoons over and buys the complete '90s X-men cartoon series, saying that was his favorite show. Later, when we pop in the first disk - our convention booty - the menu is definitely not any more elegant that say, one you might make after days of torrenting. Shouldn't the Comi-Con be all into the "authenticity" of the product? "DVDs minted by Stan Lee's second nephew who just needed a summer job before going off to college," the label should have read.

**Sigh** / **Rubbing of the eyes** - New Titles, new titles everywhere but where are have the REAL superheros gone? The simplicity and grandeur of Superman and Batman: gone? The thought of them is somehow too small for the Comi-Con spectacle. They're there. Everywhere, in fact, but somehow they're almost ghosts or specters or ancestors to the new hero. Yoda here, Yoda there, everywhere a light sabre, but where is The Force in it? The air doesn't seem to resonate with the opening trumpet fanfare of Episode IV: A New Hope.

Yes this new print title here on this table depicts a cowboy girl blasting mecca-villains with pistols ..., ahh but does she have the deep pain of Wolverine or is she just really angry that the Cold War is over? Superheros: they don't make them like they used to.

Kiosks after kiosk with controllers after emerging from the "collectibles" isles where figurines dangled from hooks. Rows and rows of what seems like near VR first-person-shoot-em-ups. The detail is mind-boggling.

Here was the star of the show and placed center stage of the convention center - the video game. Their presentation be-decked with the fanfare of lights, banners, scanty-clad models, emcees and glitter while the "penners" continued to scribble into their sketchbooks in the way-back of the hall with nothing more than a folding table, a curtain behind them and a weak placard with their name. In contrast, a triangular tube that looked like it could sheath your newly purchased katana blade bearing Electronic Arts' insignia was dangling from every one's shoulder.

Like a bunch of greedy pelicans meeting the fisherman at the at the harbor, at the DC pavilion they squawk and raise their arms up to catch a tee-shirt thrown by the emcee.

Clapping erupts at the Marvel pavilion when the trailer for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 comes to it's final crescendo and close.

Towards the entrance there are silo booths with immersion goggles. Folks get in and stand like mummies. VR Pharaohs. New Universes - Spore and the supplemental kit: Spore Comic Book Creator. Play and publish and who needs to pen anything anyway or conceive the trials and tribulations of superheros when you've got every minute, every melee and crossroads in your save history?

Is this how we're supposed to meet the superheros of tomorrow - face to face when Ultimate Alliance 4 is built with goggles and suits and glove controllers? Are these our new heroes - the Comi-Con of tomorrow that honors, not illustrators like Jim Lee, but instead the designers that fashioned the emerging legendary superheros of World of Warcraft? Is this where the inspiration once reserved for the print hero has gone - where we, the game-player, author for ourselves the pain of Wolverine and become the "to-be-continued" with every click of the mouse or flick of the joy stick? The cut scenes, the action ... the living comic book built on gadgets and consoles ... now we're talking a new era of Geekdom.

Recently, Zarathustra came out of his cave, had a sudden shiver run down his spine; he yawned, and in the last hurrah of his expiration, he sighed, saying: "Circuit City is dead."

Shopping is at last in the hands of the people, he thought; no longer a dictum of the mega-conglomerate Gods, but dictated and shaped by the terrestrials: the user, the blogger, the five-starred volunteer reviewer.

And so, with this thought, Zarathustra walked down from his aerie towards the nearest village to spread the good news that commerce was now in their hands, and that by their own hands they destroyed the monolith of hegemony. Individuality was restored, he thought, and though the products - the manna - that the Gods of commerce would continue to shower on their target demographic with nifty electronics, at last, the marketing rested in the hands of an individual's personal story - their experience in the form of a review.


At last, he thought, shopping and trade were now the responsibility of the people and the villages, and he hastened to tell them of it.


The first villager he encountered scuttled out of a shopping frenzy of 30-percent off 30-percent that would make city pigeons lusty with envy that they no longer held the scavenging title for a while.


And when Zarathustra approached him, the feverish-eyed villager rushed passed carrying an oblonged box under his arm and looking like he had just gotten away with murder. He was hastening to stash his eBay auction before anyone noticed it was in his possession.


Zarathustra spoke: "Good man, what haveth you under your arm?"


The villager smiled with pride. "I just got the HP TouchSmart IQ816 for next to the price of dirt. You oughtta run to Circuit City before they run out."


"Are they going to forget how to make them, or will computers or even electricity to power them disappear," Zarathustra asked mildly.


"No, but Circuit City's gonna run out of them."


"Precisely!"


The villager frowned. "After that, dummy, we'll have to wait for Best Buy to liquidate before you can get your brand new wares at close-out. And if that happens, then you'll just be buying direct from manufacturers and distributors. No more playing with them in-store and getting the best deal online."


"Or buying them slightly used on eBay or reconditioned from the manufacturer," added Zarathustra.


"Right!"


"So what are you going to do with that one under your arm?"


"I'm going to flip it by posting it to eBay. Make a few bucks off of it."


Zarathustra began to get glassy-eyed and his soliloquy waxed with pathos. He began to unravel for the man the UberShopper - the one that buys direct from the manufacturer or from an outlet or from another, fellow villager for the best deal; and that the purchase is informed by his fellows who have used the product and his fellows who have reviewed the merchant. He unraveled the phenomena of price-at-cost of materials, labor, and delivery without the problems of overhead and marketing campaigns. He began to unravel the issue of The Long Tail, but he cut his soliloquy short because the villager walked away frustrated that this dude was saying nonsense, and he was forgetting, by the distraction, the description he had planned for his eBay posting.


Zarathustra watched the villager walk off huffing and puffing in dismay, and considered his discourse in a different way.

Aside from the obvious buzzwords that are coming out of reports and reviews of Consumer Electronics Show 2009 in Las Vegas like the Palm Pre, Windows 7 and Netbooks like the Sony Vaio P, the undisputed, most used and unnoticed buzzword on every one's lips and pens was this: the downturn in the U.S. Economy. No doubt its a frightening picture for producers of electronic goods and software to have their hard-won efforts emerge during such a treacherous consumer climate, but its even more scary for those who want to gobble up their products but are just simply unable to when their credit is maxxed out and their pay checks are either getting slashed or taken away from them; when the issue of how or where one is going to eat becomes a oppressively real possibility - even if its just overreacting to the "downturn in the economy" it bodes for some really scary, but potentially fruitful times.

MONEY FOR NOTHING: And this is how the artist reacts to society when they have drugs around!!

Even on a personal note, a recent acquaintance of mine - a struggling musician - reported that his warehouse tenement, filled with starving artists and otherwise destitute but well-educated squatters has, by-and-large, resorted to dumpster diving at New York City five-stars just to survive. For them there's now a serious glut in the type of jobs that used to sustain them rather well like waiter and bartender positions, production assistant jobs and odd jobs like painting walls or other manual labor. How are they going to eat when it looks like the Internet has demolished the idea that movies (production assistant jobs) and music (gobbled up by torrents and free download) is now considered a commodity that is so plentiful that putting a dollar value on it seems nearly as ridiculous as paying for air. How will they eat, and more importantly, how and what will these highly educated, young, passionate and intensely idealistic bunch with a lot of friends and a lot of spit and vinegar for the "institution" do with themselves when they can't buy their drugs - and more importantly not by choice but because you can't find them in dumpsters; in short, what does anyone think will happen to this demographic when they sober up and can't get their drugs - the thing that was keeping their reactionary spirit at bay and pacified?


Anatomy of a Revolution by Crane Brinton , makes it clear that, though, the American, Bolshevik, and French were radically different in their dynamic and treatment of their particular issues, one thing was common to all: that they fomented in a climate of a disenfranchised young intelligentsia. In other words, revolutions happen in a climate precisely when the starving artist can't get hold of its drugs. Or, that is to say that, though Obama's inauguration provides a ray of hope that in a few years we'll be back in the land of milk-and-honey, how patient can a dope fiend be even while he's sure Obama will reverse the "downturn in the economy" once and for all on January 21, and no later than that?


Frankly, the ugly of it is that fanaticism is about to sweep over these amber waves of grain. That is that zealotism, radicalism, even rank animalism is not just something culture has endured in the history books, but also a climate that has entered the arena of this "economic downturn," and it is threatening to get tagged into the match when nobility gets worn out of pummelings by the faltering of our expectations we remember enjoying from our employers, governments and so on. That is, an ugly, passionate and reactionary social climate is now peeking out of the shadows despite the hopes that come from reclaiming some good leaders to defend us from ourselves. After all survival has its own code of morality that transcends things like the Ten Commandments, and no one can or should dispute survival-instinct's ethics of what constitutes good and evil.


On the other hand, and bringing this discourse back to point - the role of technology in these most auspicious times - while fanaticism may play out "only and hopefully" a minor role in the news, there may also be a climate riding along with it of intense creativity in solving the problems of rent and survival. That is, one need only look a few decades ago where the Baby Boomers faced what they considered an intolerable social climate, and while they got their drugs and resorted to zealotism, they, nonetheless became extraordinarily creative about how they were going to solve their situation. Granted, their generation enjoyed the luxury of a cohesive solidarity and also the knowing that what they were doing was important. Our generation - X - is faced with having to solve its predicament without the luxury of being inspired by visions of Strawberry Fields.


Nonetheless, Gen X will, despite itself, go down in the books as the generation who embraced the value of the Internet and paved the foundation for what future generations can enjoy as, probably, one of the most instrumental turns in history. That is, while things begin to hit the fan harder than what we have seen thus far, and while large segments of this culture begin their outright protests, there will also be a large chunk who turn to this Generation's enduring legacy, the Internet, and exploit its inherent assets with such creativity that no keynote speaker nor reporter nor corporate representative nor gadget engineer in CES 2009 has the gumption to admit: that every day dream and every fanciful idea and every futuristic scenario that they've had during their career is soon to become a constructive venue for the same fanaticism that will hit the streets and courthouses. The engineers who designed the iPhone are, go figure, Gen X'rs, and their protests by way of creative, technological solutions to our social climate will be nothing short of legendary.

Here's, perhaps, one example where this feverish creativity could play out constructively in this "economic downturn": a Wiki Bank. It seems like a rather silly idea at this point - a bank owned and operated by a group of eager volunteers and whose funds are backed not by gold but by penny jars of massive amounts of users. For certain, there are some swarthy and capable Web coding zealots with a lot of jobless time on their hands and who watched Zeitgeist: Addendum one too many times - impressed with the notion that the real problem isn't money or banks, but current practice of charging interest for loans ... well, with the Internet's penchant for democratizing every aspect of our lives, it's not far fetched to think that, while it already democratized knowledge in the form of Wikipedia, has been democratizing the Media Industry - kicking and screaming, has been democratizing the publishing industry, is democratizing software development and proprietary knowledge, and, in short: Democratizing ... well, it's not too far of a stretch that some core institutions who form the fabric what seems to be as solid as the Earth being flat: banking ... well, that's under the gun as well - especially when financial institutions are collapsing right and left.


At any rate, while technology pundits and the average iPhone user and Web surfer all admit that the economic downturn is quite a bummer, nothing short of a miracle's - even the election of Obama - is going to clear the issue up right away and, God help us all, in time to rescue all of us without casualties. But, while our, thus-far, extravagant lifestyle that we've enjoyed since Ronald Regan gives way to the ever increasing rigors of a deep, dark recession, there's a bit of silver lining in all of this. The crucible, the kiln and the forge are hell-fire environment where metals and earth are shred apart and molten into unusual forms, but when the fires cool, something rare and beautiful are emerge where artistry has shaped those extreme situations into an artifact worthy of admiration.


Likewise, while everyone pats themselves on the back over CES 2009's success as a trade show, the lingering and resonant mentions to the economic downturn forebode what will be strong current in Technology's trends for 2009: using its latent democratizing nature for discovering left-wing, hair-brained and downright radical new ways of enduring and emerging from this long dark night of the soul that sure to face every one of us at some point before the year's out.

It behooves is to recognized those Web-broadcasting tools that have truly hit the mark with what the whole thrust of what society is striving towards: to make it easy and expedient for people to connect and participate in each other's lives.

On Thursday, I posted a gripe I had with the Universe as my "status" on facebook. Not an hour had passed and my peeps were calling me up concerned. On Saturday, the friends were commenting on my newly updated profile picture. A week ago, I responded to a cry for help and it rekindled an old friendship from high school. She went so far as to introduce me to another friend of hers as her boyfriend, and I never even got to first base with her. Would've liked to, but that's another story.

Suffice it to say, blogging is a dead end when it comes to a personal broadcast -and broadcasting ourselves is what we do these days. It's quite a momentous day when I KNOW that someone has read a post on one of the four blogs I maintain. My wife doesn't even read them.

Cell phones are bonk. It's quite a rare day when a friend or family member actually answers my call and I don't have to leave a voicemail.

I don't really think my youtube channel had had any visitors.

Both of my Wikies have remained blank with me being the only contributor.

My IM client shows that none of my friends are online at the moment, and if they are, their status lists them as busy.

Generally my e-mail is cluttered with bills.

But, Lo! On Facebook - mobile and browser compliant - the connection has been made. The postings have threads at last! I have found that other's are thinking of me by posting and tagging me in a photo from their beureau. Notices, notices. "You are welcome and appreciated in this digital hang out," the site seems to say.

Kudos to you facebook for salvaging my social sphere. My voice is heard and it's cause for debate.
